DISSING RESPECT

It’s funny the way the concept of respect works. If you are being disrespected, you demand respect. If you are the one being disrespectful, then it’s “Just a Joke” or “They’re being ‘overly-sensitive.’” But a world without respect is a dangerous world to live in, and there are lines that should not be crossed. Perhaps that’s the real meaning of “The Golden Rule.”

RESTORING HONOR

Yesterday’s "Restoring Honor" Rally held by Glenn Beck at the Washington Mall gathered “thousands” of supporters (try hundreds of thousands, according to the estimated capacity of the areas literally filled with people) who stood together in support of a restoration of honor and faith in America by Americans. There was a strong religious overtone to the entire ceremony, and absolutely zero politics. And on the 47th Anniversary of the “I Have a Dream” speech by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., there were references of Dr. King’s vision of Racial Equality and Individual Responsibility embedded in the words of almost every speaker and every topic shared, with heavy emphasis to the part so often omitted by those who quote Dr. King’s speech: “the CONTENT OF THEIR CHARACTER.”

ALL POLITICS IS LOCAL

The Former Speaker of the House Thomas Philip “Tip” O’Neill, Jr., coined an important phrase during his political career: “All Politics is Local,” and our FOUNDERS would have agreed with that. In fact, it was the basis of our “Republican” form of government. Each Member in the House of Representative was intended to be the elected voice of the constituents of their individual districts. Each member of the House was intended to be responsible to those constituents for their actions, their choices, and every word they spoke as a Representative of those voters. And when the 17th Amendment took the power to select Senators away from the State Legislators, also elected by the People of that State, and, instead, put that power into the hands of those People directly, it made those Senators equally responsible to those People as well. As a result, all Politics, no matter whether they are related to the City, the County, the State or the Presidency, are, in fact, Local!

CONSTITUTIONAL CONSISTENCY

Conservatives, like myself, have been arguing for a restoration of the CONSTITUTIONAL BOUNDARIES of Congress and the President, and a RESTORATION of the Principles outlined by our Founders. Meanwhile, there are many Conservatives who are also clamoring against the building of a Mosque in close proximity to Ground Zero, the site of the attacks on September 11, 2001. And when the President Obama said that our Constitution protects their right to build, within the limitations of City & State Ordinances, he was…(choke…CHOKE)…absolutely right.

BEWARE EASY ANSWERS

I’ve noticed a trend in the various blogs and Facebook.com pages dedicated to pointing the Finger of Blame at the Obama Administration for the nation’s ills. As I’ve said before, I disagree with pretty much EVERYTHING that his Administration has done, and pretty much EVERYONE involved with this mess, but blaming Obama is too easy of an answer. While his actions have most certainly caused a dramatic increase in the National Debt and created incredible roadblocks in the way of our economic recovery, it isn’t all Obama any more than it was all Bush. It’s just too easy of an answer.

AMERICAN EXCEPTIONALISM

Our Founders believed in American Exceptionalism, though they didn’t have or use that term. It was an understated belief that they, as individuals, could succeed if the Government got out of the way. If you read the Preamble of the Constitution, it clarifies the purposes of the Government: 1) to create a More Perfect Union (in deference to the weak union under the Articles of Confederation); 2) to Establish Justice (implication: EQUAL justice, not Social Justice); 3) PROVIDE for the Common Defense; 4) PROMOTE the General Welfare; and 5) Secure the Blessings of LIBERTY to Ourselves and our Posterity.

PATRIOTIC GAMES

I’ve noticed a disturbing trend that has been going on in Political Races wherein opponents to a certain point of view are called “Unpatriotic.” Conservatives accuse Liberals of being Unpatriotic all the time. Liberals make the same accusation of Conservatives. Both sides accuse the Progressives, who in turn point the finger at the Liberals and Conservatives. Being Patriotic has NOTHING to do with being a Conservative, or a Liberal, or a Progressive, because being Patriotic means doing and supporting what you feel is best for the COUNTRY!

THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE

This Post is about the Rights of the States, as defined by the 10th Amendment. Each State is intended to be a “Sovereign Body,” entitled to Govern Itself in all regards that are not SPECIFICALLY delineated in the United States Constitution. Under the 10th Amendment, the Powers of the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT are specifically limited. The responsibility of FEDERAL JUDGES in regards to STATE LAWS is to determine 1) if the Statute violates the Authority of the Federal Government as defined by the Constitution; and 2) if the Statute conforms to Federal Law, which must already conform to the Constitution. Beyond that, the States and the People retain the rights CONSTITUTIONALLY to enact their own “Community Standards” in regards to a wide array of issues.

SOME GOOD NEWS AS MAVERICKVOICE TURNS 100!

Today is a milestone for the MaverickVoice, as I post our 100th Article on the Internet. So, since this is a Special Day, I’m going to do something Special. I’m going to do something dramatically different from what we usually seem to post here. I’m going to share some Good News. In fact, it’s not just Good News for Conservatives, but, in my opinion, it’s Good News for the United States!

MINORITY RULES

The basis for the National Popular Vote argument is the position that everyone should have an equal vote. This concept is generally considered “Democracy;” however, as James Madison described it in Federalist Paper #10, a Democracy is “a society consisting of a small number of citizens, who assemble to administer the government in person.” It requires that EVERY PERSON WITH A VOTE must gather and CAST THEIR VOTE each and every time an issue needs to be decided. To assume that the “One Person One Vote” argument holds any validity whatsoever, we must also assume that, at the very least, a majority of the population will, in fact, cast their votes. Guess what? That doesn’t tend to be the case.

It seems like the battle cry of Democracy: “One Person, One Vote.” And it certainly sounds like a concept that should protect the Freedom and Liberty of a population, something that I totally support.
ANOTHER LESSON LEARNED…AGAIN

In the time since our financial troubles started in 2008, our Government has repeated the same mistakes over and over again, each time going bigger and more expensively than the time before. TARP? STIMULUS? HEALTHCARE REFORM? FINANCIAL REFORM?! In each case, the margin for passing the bill was so narrow that it literally came down to one or two votes in order to get he deal passed…all with the very VOCAL opposition of the American People, and all in the name of being COMPASSIONATE.

SIT DOWN & SHUT UP

Do you ever feel like the only argument that ever seems to come from the Progressive/Liberal side of the Political Aisle is “Sit Down and Shut Up?” Al Gore has used it, claiming that the “Debate” over the issue of “Global Warming” is over. Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid have used it in regards to the Healthcare Reform Bill back in March, 2010. Barack Obama has used it…well, pretty much every time he’s opened his mouth. And their side of the aisle has a long tradition of using that tactic.

FREE SPEECH OR HATE SPEECH

Racism and prejudice abound in the United States. A few years ago, I would have argued to the opposite point, giving examples of how far we’ve come since the days of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Civil Rights Protests of the 1960’s. In truth, we have come a long way from the days of Dr. King, the KKK burning crosses and lynching black voters who had the courage to stand for their rights and pursue EQUALITY in America. But “Equality” has taken on a new meaning for some, and it is unfortunate that, as with the radical few who would put on white sheets and commit crimes of hatred and prejudice, thus painting a picture of bigotry and hatred by all whites against blacks, that, in this day and age, there are those who now spew the same kind of vile bigotry from the side of minorities. One such piece of human refuse is a guy by the name of “King Samir Shabazz” of the New Black Panther Party.

INDEPENDENCE DAY

I’ve noticed that the names of our Historical Holidays have changed over the 38 years of my life to date. No longer do we celebrate George Washington’s Birthday or Abraham Lincoln’s Birthday: we have “President’s Day,” a day to commemorate all of the Presidents of the United States by taking the day off from work. “Decoration Day,” which was enacted after the Civil War to honor the soldiers who died in battle, has become “Memorial Day,” which, according to Wikipedia, “marks the start of the Summer Vacation Season.” (WOW!) And “Independence Day” has become “the Fourth of July.” These changes may seem subtle, but the truth is that they “Fundamentally Transform” the way that we think about these days. After all, what is so special about the Fourth of July?

FOUNDING FATHER’S DAY

The strength of any family is founded in the lessons taught by its Parents. What a child learns at a young age is carried with them until they are adults, and then they pass that knowledge on to their children as well. But the most important lessons are not about math, science or history. The most important lessons are those taught in the realm of philosophy, and faith, and honor. These aren’t lessons that can or should be limited to the teachers in a school, but should be emphasized by those role models who should have the greatest influence on a child’s life: their PARENTS.

CONSERVATIVE INSPIRATION

I recently posted some Conservative Advice for Politicians claiming to be Conservatives, boiling down to, essentially, “Don’t quote Teddy Roosevelt!” It occurred to me that we need examples to emulate: Conservatives worth having as a Hero from History that basically exemplify their beliefs. The simplest and most recent choice for most of us is Ronald Reagan, but by studying Reagan, we can learn about who HE emulated, the Conservative figure from history that inspired HIM. For Reagan, one source of that inspiration was Calvin Coolidge.

PRINCIPLE #4: GREATER LIBERTIES

I tend to describe Freedom and Liberty like this: FREEDOM is the right to choose, and LIBERTIES are the choices we are able to make. Having the right to choose is important, but if you have no choices, no options to select from, then it really isn’t much of a right. For example, during the 1980’s in Soviet Russia, ASSUMING you had the money, you could CHOOSE to buy a car; however, the only car you could buy was a Lada, and there was a 3-year waiting period, AND the car spent more time in the shop than on the road. That hardly qualifies as Freedom, and certainly doesn’t qualify as LIBERTY!
