Today’s Post is all about a snappy bit of rhetoric that our esteemed President has been trotting out for weeks. He seems to enjoy painting the picture of our Nation being like a car that’s been run into a ditch. Of course, he claims that the Democrats have been down in the ditch, pushing & pulling, getting sweaty and muscling the car back up on the road while the Republicans have been standing at the top of the ditch “Sippin’ on a Slurpee” and asking for the keys back. It’s a humorous analogy. I even chuckled the first time I heard it. After a couple of weeks, though, I’m sick of it, and I feel compelled to correct our President’s analogy.

As I’ve explained before, the First Principle of Conservatism is PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY, the simple concept that I am free to make my own choices, and, therefore, must face the consequences of those choices. I stepped in a hole in a grassy median. Nobody made me walk through the grass. I could have gone around through the parking lot and stayed on the flat pavement. It was MY CHOICE, and, because I didn’t watch where I was stepping, I got hurt.

Discrimination, in and of itself, is not wrong. We discriminate every single day. We choose which route to take to work because it is either faster, fewer miles, or less stressful. We choose which store to shop at because of what they have to sell, their prices and quality, or the convenience of their location. We choose what shows and movies to watch based upon what we enjoy watching, both at the specific time and in general. And the Discrimination of the consumer influence what products are available, what stores stay in business and what shows stay on television.

Liberty is an important concept, and Conservatives are not alone in this belief. In fact, the very basis of the terms “Liberal” and “Libertarian” come from the word Liberty, but the differences between them are significant. Modern “Liberals” tend to be focused on Single Issue items and seek Government Intervention to promote and protect that Single Issue. Many Libertarians share the same Single Issues as their Liberal counterparts, but their solution is LESS LAW, not more, to solve the problem. So let me ask the question: Are you a Liberal or a Libertarian?

I’ve been thinking about what makes a person successful. To that end, I’ve come up with 12 Lessons that I believe we should be teaching kids…and ADULTS today, and they are all connected to the Five Principles of Conservatism. Do you have any suggestions or additions?

When is a cupcake not just a cupcake? When it’s a controversy. Maybe you’ve heard about this, maybe you haven’t, but, apparently, a Baker in Indianapolis declined an order to make rainbow-colored cupcakes for college students at the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) for “National Coming Out Day” on October 11. Their reason? According to co-owner David Stockton, they’re a “family-run business, we have two young, impressionable daughters, and we thought maybe it was best not to do that.” (Story at On Top Magazine)
