If being a Conservative means anything, it means remembering the past, the sacrifice of those who have come before, and the sacred duty of those who have yet to serve. On this Memorial Day, we at MaverickVoice.com SALUTE all of the brave Men and Women who have served with honor, and, in particular, those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. To that end, I feel it is only fitting and proper that we share what is possibly the most heartfelt and poignant salute ever given to our Fallen Heroes.

“To HELL with the CONSTITUTION…” Not exactly a Conservative remark, but these words were spoken, and they were spoken by a REPUBLICAN. Specifically, a PROGRESSIVE Republican. Specifically, it was said by the Progressive Republican that has served as the “Hero” (His Words) of John McCain, and, recently, was QUOTED in a speech made by Lt. Col. Allen West, who is campaigning to be the Congressman for District 22 in Florida. (Yeah, I don’t like bringing it up, but I have to.) That Progressive Republican is named Theodore Roosevelt.

Welcome to the Nanny State, a reality where the Government, at every level, tells you what is good for you, how to live, and what to do. You can get an abortion, but it’s illegal to commit suicide. You can smoke pot if you get a prescription, but you can’t take Ibuprofen if you’re a teenage girl having menstrual cramps. If you shoot someone for breaking into your house and don’t kill them, they can sue you for their injuries, and if you miss a stop sign or go through a red light, Big Brother is watching, and the ticket is in the mail!

I tend to describe Freedom and Liberty like this: FREEDOM is the right to choose, and LIBERTIES are the choices we are able to make. Having the right to choose is important, but if you have no choices, no options to select from, then it really isn’t much of a right. For example, during the 1980’s in Soviet Russia, ASSUMING you had the money, you could CHOOSE to buy a car; however, the only car you could buy was a Lada, and there was a 3-year waiting period, AND the car spent more time in the shop than on the road. That hardly qualifies as Freedom, and certainly doesn’t qualify as LIBERTY!

It should seem like a “No Brainer” that people want to pay LESS in taxes. If you only paid $1 for every $1000 earned, (that’s 1/10 of 1%), people would still want to pay LESS in taxes! Nobody wants their hard earned money taken from them without their consent, and that’s the point. It’s not the AMOUNT of taxes so much as the lack of CONSENT to its loss.

The most recent President to significantly reduce the Size of Government and its spending was Ronald Reagan. He said, “Government is not the Solution, it’s the problem.” He knew that our Government had become so bloated that it was crushing the Citizenry that was forced to carry it. As Conservatives, we are not ANTI-GOVERNMENT, but, rather, we are PRO-LIMITED GOVERNMENT. We accept the need for our Government to serve in the capacities defined by the Constitution, and that, beyond those functions, Government should remain limited. By limiting its size and its power, yes, we remove the safety net that the Government can provide, but we also ensure our Freedoms FROM a Government that, if placed in the control of the WRONG people, could enslave the Population for Generations. Unlike Liberals and Progressives, who typically see the Government as the BEST Solution for the ills of the People, Conservatives see the Government as the Solution of LAST RESORT, and that we should not place our faith in the Government to solve our Problems, but in OURSELVES!
