CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW? by T. Edwin Perry
I DO NOT CONDONE VIOLENCE! Let me be perfectly clear on this: There is absolutely, positively, without a doubt, undeniably NO PLACE in our society for violence. It is unacceptable for ANYONE to take violent action against ANYONE unless you are literally in the moment of DEFENDING YOUR LIFE! Unless there is a weapon in your face threatening the lives of yourself or your family, then violence in ANY FORM is WRONG! (Have I made myself clear? Do you understand what I’m saying?)
But, it’s likely by now that you’ve heard that Democrat supporters of the recent healthcare plan are receiving threatening calls and letters calling them names and hoping they die. (I’ve heard some of the calls on the radio. The calls are definitely coming from the shallow end of the gene pool.) Vandalism of the Niagra Falls office of Louise Slaughter (D-NY) in the form of a brick through the window and the cutting of a gas line at the home of the brother of Misrepresentative Tom Periello (D-VA) have been the most violent action to actually take place, but our member of Congress have gone out of their way to blame the Tea Party, the Republicans and the right-wing nut jobs…OK, that last one makes sense…of threatening their lives.
And while I am sorely opposed to the threat of Violence, it is unmistakable that they at least HEARD the threats. Months of opposition, of logical arguments, of pleading for an ACTUAL debate fell on deaf ears and the ego of a one-sided Congress ignoring the Will of the People.
And let’s also be honest about this, OK? Threatening calls & letters are nothing new for members of Congress, regardless of which side of the aisle they sit on. It’s why they travel with security details. It comes typically with cursing, and swearing, and spitting, and name calling, and is, in most cases, JUST AN EMPTHY THREAT, little more than a vitriolic steam-valve to relieve the pressure of those who DISAGREE with a member’s actions.
“I’ve received threats since I assumed elected office, not only because of my position but also because I’m Jewish.” Eric Cantor (R-VA) knows about threatening calls, and about violence, including a bullet shot through a window at his campaign office in Richmond, VA, earlier this week. But he has opted NOT to release the phone calls he’s received to the media because he doesn’t want to incite more violence. Oddly enough, the Democrats have chosen a different tactic: playing the victim card…again.
Ginny Brown-Waite (R-FL) has also received threatening calls, including one stating, “”Just wanna let you know I have 27 people that are going to make sure that this b**** does not live to see her next term. Good-bye.” Now, THIS qualifies as an ACTUAL death threat, unlike e-mails to Suzanne Kosmas (D-FL) that have urged her to commit suicide or that she & her family should “Burn in Hell” since switching her vote on the Healthcare Bill to “Yes.”
And while we’re pointing out differences, let’s look back to last summer and the rise of the Tea Party Protests and the “Town Hall” assemblies. Have you EVER heard of a Tea Party Protest turning violent? Nope. Have you ever heard of a Tea Party Protester attacking an opposing protester and biting their FINGER off? Nope. Have you ever heard of a Tea Party Protest burning cars, smashing windows or littering the streets with trash? Nope, in fact most reports show that the participants actually CLEAN UP after themselves at Tea Party Rally’s.
Meanwhile, members of the Left-Supporting ACORN and SEIU have assembled en masse to intimidate the opposition, including bussing protestors to the homes of AIG executives to intimidate people for accepting their contractual bonuses, assaulting and, in one instance, BITING THE FINGER OFF of a Tea Party Protestor.
Again, let’s be clear: VIOLENCE is wrong, and we should rise above it. Threatening violence is ALSO wrong, and we should rise above it. And if you cross the line and threaten the life of a member of Congress, or anyone for that matter, you should be punished…LEGALLY! But the members of our Congress also need to realize something: if they act AGAINST the will of the people, they have to expect anger in return, and that anger will not be pretty.
I’ll make no excuses for the fact that I will do EVERYTHING in my power to LEGALLY ensure that my Misrepresentative Ron Klein will be unemployed come January, and I will continue to resist the overthrow of our Government by those who seek to destroy what makes this country great, but I will also not make any excuses for those who cross the line. The rules remain the same: Cross the line and pay the price.
