Entitlementality by T. Edwin Perry
Do you suffer from “Entitlementality?” Entitlementality is a misconception wherein you believe that the Government is responsible to provide for your basic daily necessities. It’s not, by the way, but there are millions of people in the United States, and, for that matter, the WORLD, who suffer from this condition.
The US Constitution does not list the things that the Government is responsible to provide to the population, with the exception of the common defense. In fact, the Constitution ACTUALLY lists the things that the Government cannot TAKE from you. For example, Free Speech, or the right to Bear Arms. The right to Assemble is also protected. Your right to freedom is protected, as well as your right a fair & speedy trial should you be accused of a crime. If you are convicted of a crime, you are protected against cruel and unusual punishment. The Government is not permitted to take, or even use, your home or your property without due cause and just compensation. These are just a few of YOUR RIGHTS under the Constitution; however, at no point in the Body or Amendments to this document are you afforded the RIGHT to BE SUPPORTED by the Government.
THE GOVERNMENT IS NOT RESPONSIBLE TO PUT FOOD ON YOUR TABLE. Of course, that doesn’t keep millions of people from accepting, perpetually in some cases, Food Stamps or other Government Assistance to provide for their food.
THE GOVERNMENT IS NOT RESPONSIBLE TO GIVE YOU A HOUSE. Of course, that doesn’t keep millions of people from accepting, perpetually in some cases, “Free” Government Housing or subsidies to pay their rent. In fact, in regards to the current housing crisis, there are hundreds of thousands who are literally living RENT FREE in the houses they could not afford to keep the house out of Foreclosure!
THE GOVERNMENT IS NOT RESPONSIBLE TO PROVIDE FOR YOUR TRANSPORTATION. Of course, that doesn’t keep millions of people from accepting, perpetually in some cases, “Free” Public Transportation as part of their Welfare Benefits. Some people are actually provided with Taxi Vouchers, which essentially turn Privately Operated Taxi Cabs into Public Transportation, and, in some cases, individuals can even be provided cars for free to get to and from work, which are deeded to them after maintaining a job for as little as six months!
THE GOVERNMENT IS NOT RESPONSIBLE TO PROVIDE FOR YOUR COMMUNICATIONS. But would you believe that there are millions of people who are not only provided with free home telephones, but cellular telephones & service? It’s true! There are some areas where basic cable television is also included as part of the common Welfare Assistance Program!
THE GOVERNMENT IS NOT RESPONSIBLE TO PROVIDE YOU WITH MONEY! Of course, that doesn’t stop the government from funding Hundreds of Billions of Dollars, every year, to provide individuals WHO CAN WORK with money to pay their bills, buy things like TV’s and Computers or even put into the bank! And what is required to get this free money? Don’t earn any money! It’s that simple!
Now, let me make one point here, before you think I’m just a coldhearted bastard with no compassion for the poor: There are many people who should receive assistance. The disabled, for example, whether physically or mentally, should be supported. People who lose their jobs, through no fault of their own, or who are unable to work TEMPORARILY because of an injury, should be supported. But, and this is the difference, there is a difference between those who CANNOT take care of themselves and those who WILL NOT take care of themselves. Those who WILL NOT take care of themselves are the ones who tend to suffer from Entitlementality. (Now, back to your regularly scheduled blog!)
Now, the Government counts on people to become addicted to these Entitlements. (See, that’s where the word entitlementality comes from.) Those who have a reliance on the Government to provide for their needs are more likely to keep the people who vote to provide those entitlements to them in office. What other reason is there to expand these programs, year after year, even though it ends up adding to the Federal Deficit and raising your taxes? And, the argument used to legislate these programs by the Government is always publicized as “Caring for the Poor,” even though it tends to do more harm to the overall economy than help the few who qualify for those entitlements.
The Mother of All Entitlements is currently on deck, and will result in the biggest burden on our economy that our country has ever seen in the name of “Health Care Reform.” The House of Representatives rammed it through, barely, even with all of its faults pointed out ad nauseum in my previous posts. Now, the Senate has the job of writing its own Bill, and then the reconciliation begins. One of two things will happen: Either the Legislation will fall apart and the free market will be protected to fight for another day, OR they’ll pass a version of the House’s legislation and burden our economy so badly that Health Care as we know it will be changed forever. The key, one way or the other, will be the voice of the American People.
So, American People, I ask you: Do you prefer a Free Market where you can choose how to spend your money, or do you suffer from Entitlementality? Once you’ve decided, call your Senator and make DAMN SURE they listen to you.
